NAS4Free allows resources to be shared with other machines equipped with MS Windows, Apple and UNIX / Linux operating systems. NAS4Free – an open source operating system for embedded devices that provides the NAS (Network-Attached Storage) server. every upgrade of Unraid resulted in something breaking.Īnother advise, if you are running dual procs, make sure you assign the proper core/threads to your VM so it doesnt cross over to both procs! Made this mistake on my windows VM for years, suffering from really bad perforamnce. The last version | Released: 11.2. I had it up and running in literally 2 minutes. The new 6.10 version now works with wiregaurd out of the box. Ending up having to repair all of my zigbee devices again (over 60 devices). The only complaint i have is something to do with my USB Zigbee stick not passing through properly when i upgraded to the latest RC2 of 6.10. I couldnt agree with you more! I had run Windows HyperV, Proxmox, OpenMediaVault, Ubuntu and VMware, ESXi. Both solid solutions and both work very well. The two projects that I support are unRAID and TrueNAS. My time with friends and family is more valuable. Simply said, there is cost/benefit to everything we do in life, and if I can save hours of f*cking around with hardware and software and just have things that "just work" - I'll take it any day. Yes, you can go with free alternatives and set it up yourself, this however comes with the burden of ownership and maintenance on you. This is ONLY intended to outline some of the key features and benefits of using unRAID. NOTE: Please do NOT take the above features as superior to those who has the skills can setup alternatives for free. NOTE: Please do NOT take the above features as superior to those who has the skills to setup alternatives for free. Community Apps (MASSIVE community app repo) Uses different sized drives (parity needs to match the biggest drive in array) I think it is important to outline some of the key benefits of using unRAID: I love unraid and totally think it is perfect for the consumer to use in a home environment. I had a few hard drive failures and was able to replace without a hitch and on data loss. I am not really using the server at its max, but running a windows VM, OPNSense for firewall/routing, Hassio for home assistant.įor dockers, the usual suspects are running including plex, duckdns, openvpn, tasmota, et. Been running Unraid for a very long time originally on a desktop with 6 hard drive but now running on an actual server.ĭell R720XD with Dual E5-2665 Xeon procs 224 Gigs RAMĨ Drives totalling 26 TB (2 x 6TB dual parity) Alhtough you can use Linux +Snapraid etc, or OMV, to be honest Unraid is just so fluidic and seamless in what it does without alot of tinkering. I run OMV on separate server which backs up my unraid server. Supports Docker, Plex, Emby, Jellyfin, Sonarr / Radarr ,Transmission, BitTorrent, PieHole, HomeAssistant, VPN, etc. You can setup unraid for 30 or 60d free of charge if you just wanted to try it out (but of course if you want to get the deal have to do that before.) I've been running it for years from their 3 or 4.x days, though 3-4 MB/CPU upgrades (I generally when upgrade my other machines, move the old HW down to my unraid tower.) Really it's great SW and very flexible/useful with fantastic forum support and lots of youtube videos etc. At which point you would get a new one and restore the files from the backups made and get license reset to the new thumb drive. USB thumb drives obviously don't go that often (you should get a quality one) but yes technically they can. and if you lose the config you can't access it. That's one of the nice things is that it's not like an array where it's all proprietary, etc. However there is no data loss on the physical drives, as you can technically mount the drives and read them with a boot disk or in another system fine. The config is of course on the USB, but there's a backup process to the drive array that you can/should setup. Sorry for the noob question but I'm interested to give UnRaid a try If you lose the USB drive does it mean you lose access to the file/drives?
